How to Wear a Chain with a Hoodie: Over, Under or Inside an Open Zip?

A chain can sit over a hoodie, underneath it, or against your T-shirt inside an open zip. Start with where you want the necklace to show. Then check how it works with the collar, drawstrings and zip when you move.

There isn’t one length or one rule that works for every hoodie. A light zip-up and a heavy pullover give a necklace very different space.

Start with the neckline

Put on the hoodie you actually plan to wear. Look at the space around your neck and chest before adding another piece.

With an open zip, your T-shirt can become the background for the chain. With a pullover, the necklace may sit against the outer fabric or stay mostly tucked away. Either can work. Decide whether you want the chain to lead the look or remain a smaller detail.

Keep your first try simple: one necklace, a plain top and your usual hoodie.

Use an open zip to frame the necklace

An open hoodie gives you a useful middle ground. The necklace stays outside your T-shirt while the hoodie frames it on either side.

Let the opening leave room around the piece. If you’re wearing a pendant, check whether it is easy to see against the top underneath. You don’t need to pull the zip to a precise point; adjust it until the necklace and clothing feel balanced to you.

The ASPIS & SYRUS styling illustration shows this approach: a shorter plain chain above a pendant, with dark clothing around both. It is a visual idea to try, rather than a guide to exact lengths or where the set will sit on you.

For the relationship between a plain chain and a pendant, read our chain and pendant necklace set guide.

Wearing a chain over a pullover hoodie

If you want the chain to sit outside a pullover, try it over the actual garment before deciding on the fit. The fabric changes the space the necklace needs, and a large hood or raised collar can hide part of it.

A plain chest area makes the piece easier to see. With graphics, drawstrings or a prominent logo, decide which detail you want to notice first. Start with one chain or one pendant rather than adding several competing elements.

Move the drawstrings away from the necklace and check that nothing catches. If the piece feels tight over the fabric, don’t force it into place.

Our current illustration shows an open zip style, not a tested over-pullover fit. Use it for that open-layer idea and make a separate fit check with your own pullover.

Keeping the chain underneath

Tucking a chain under a hoodie is a quieter option. You might see part of it near the collar, or keep the whole piece hidden.

Make sure it feels comfortable under the fabric. Check the pendant and clasp when you sit down, turn your head or take the hoodie off. If you feel pulling, stop and adjust the layers rather than tugging the clothing over the necklace.

Visibility is a choice. You don’t have to show the whole chain for it to belong in the outfit.

Choose the length by trying the outfit

The listed length is useful, but it doesn’t tell you exactly where a chain will sit with every neckline. Your neck size, the chain’s shape, the pendant and the clothing all affect the result.

Use a tape measure or a piece of string as a starting point, then compare it with the actual garment. Leave enough room to move comfortably. For choosing between those two common lengths, see our 50cm vs 55cm necklace guide.

Avoid choosing a longer chain just because a styling article gives everyone the same number. Start with the position you want, then check the available measurements.

One chain, or a second layer?

One chain is enough to change a plain outfit. Add another only when you know what you want it to contribute: a different texture, a pendant or a separate line.

With an open hoodie, a plain chain and a pendant can each have their own space. Check that both remain visible when you move; a combination that works in a still picture may need adjusting in everyday wear.

A quick check before heading out

  • Can you see the detail you want to show?
  • Does the necklace feel comfortable when you turn and sit?
  • Are the pendant, drawstrings and zip clear of one another?
  • Can you take the hoodie off without pulling on the chain?

If the outfit feels crowded, remove one element and try again.

Frequently asked questions

Should a chain go over or under a hoodie?

Both are options. Wear it outside if you want it visible against the fabric, tuck it underneath for a quieter look, or use an open zip to show the chain against your T-shirt.

Can you wear a pendant with a zip-up hoodie?

Yes. Try the pendant against the top underneath and leave enough space around it. Check the zip and drawstrings so they don’t catch on the piece.

What chain length should I choose for a hoodie?

There is no universal length. Compare the measurements with your neck, the garment and the position you want. A necklace that sits comfortably against a T-shirt may feel different over heavier fabric.

Do I need a thick chain?

No. A finer chain can work inside an open neckline, while a more noticeable piece may be easier to see against bulky clothing. Choose the amount of detail you like and check it with the actual outfit.

Start with the clothes you wear on repeat. Add the piece that feels like yours.
